Studio apartment decorating new york city

hi everyone i'm chernise yvette and i'mgoing to be showing you a tour of my 250 square foot micro studio apartment inchicago you heard that right 250 square when i tell people i live ina tiny space they often ask me if i have a bathroom, does the bathroom have a door, do i have a stove,do i have a kitchen do i have on of those pull out beds that pull out from the wall am i insane and all of those are validquestions because i had no idea what a micro studio apartment was before i decidedto move into one i never even lived in a studio apartment before. one reason i'm making thisvideo is because when i did a google search looking for micro studio's i didn'tfind much, so two reasons i decided to look into

a small space, is i wanted to save money because i hadno money saved. the second reason is because i have a goal of becoming a minimalist. now a days ionly purchase items that i absolutely love and enjoy looking at and enjoy using and i use often. when ichecked out this unit, the person who was living here had a mattress on the floorand this round table and i have to literally walk around everything like this... everything was ill fitting.what really sold me about this apartment is that is has high ceilings, i knewthat was one of the things i could not live without. another deal breaker for me wasif i couldn't find parking. i have a car now, my building doesn't have a parking lot. but, i was able to find a lot nearby and then this used to be a single occupancy hotel that they gutted out

to make into apartment units.so it had all the updated appliances. marble counter tops, all of the light switches in the rightposition, new paint on the wall...the building has a doorman and as a female i feelsafe knowing that there is security here for me. there's somewhere to put my bike because theres a bike room. also, i compete in fitness shows and i workout six to seven days a week so it's nice to have afitness center in the building that i can go to if i can't make it to the gym. plus theres a roof top deck and its all about location too. i can just step outside andi'm at the lake, i got bike trails run trails, theres restaurants and nightlife... i have never been the type ofperson that likes a lot of company over to my home so the way i decorated wasfor me. so, i decided to keep my queen

size bed. i like to do all my work on mylaptop from my bed. i watch tv from my bed, i sleep in my bed, so my place revolves around my big ole bed. maybe for you if you're an entertainer you would decorate your place differently.you would make it more inviting for guest. me, i have 1 to 2 people over here every once in awhile. so, no biggie for me. here's some things i've learned about decorating my micro studioapartment. you want to go up with everything. youwant to draw the eye up, it'll give you the illusion that you do have more space. and choose furniture that you're really gonna use. you don't haveto go the traditional route of having a coffee table and a side table and this and that just because that's tradition have the items that you're going to use.i'm never sitting at that desk doing

work. i never eat at that desk. i eat in mybed. (laughs) but, i'm going to keep the desk of course because i paid for it and it looks cute. there's nothing elsethat i would replace it with, so that corner with just be kinda empty.acrylic virtually doesn't take up any space so i really love my acrylic tables. you want to look fornesting tables things that you can store within each other and just pull them outwhen you need them. also, look for items that have wheels so it's very easy foryou to move around and i'm a big fan plastic containers things that i couldsee into. oh, here's another thing that i've learned get the containers that have thedrawers that you can pull out otherwise

if you a container that has a lidyou're just gonna be stacking things on top of it when you need it, it's gonna be a hasslefor you to take everything off top of it to get that one item. so, f you haveeverything stacked up in their containers that have pull out drawersyour gonna be able to easily access everything. my unit, i pay a little under $1000now. that is going up every single year i started off at $865 about two orthree years ago and that's just going to keep going up, i know that, so cross my fingers, i just need to make more money every year. hey guys, so that's my250 square foot micro studio apartment in chicago! i hope this tour helped you out in deciding whether you may wantto live in a small space and if you were just checking this video out to see where live and how i roll, then thanks for watching! if you liked it

give it a thumbs up. subscribe to mychannel to get notification of when i post new videos and ill see you guys next time.

Studio apartment decorating ideas on a budget

jen chu: i loved the idea ofa room just be a bed room-- literally just aroom of a bed. because it's so small, it can'treally be anything else, and you can't really fit anyother furniture in it, you might as well just make the onefocal piece really pop. i'm jen chu. i am an interior decorator andart director for tv, and this is my 78-square-foot bedroomin brooklyn. i've done art direction forproject runway, for the latest

real world in portland. so i've had the privilege ofworking on a lot of things that are sort of likehousehold names. my bedroom is a 1.5 apartment,as they say. i live in the 0.5 andmy roommate lives in the one full bedroom. my room is just unusuallysmall. this is probably the spacethat i've designed that reflects my style the most.

when it comes to my personalspace, it just makes me want to really pare it down to thethings that i love so i'm not surrounded by too muchextra clutter. i knew from the get-gothat i'd always wanted a canopy bed. and for the longest time, ithought that your bedroom would have to be huge tobe able to pull it off. but then i realized maybe areally small room would be able to accommodate one too.

this bed is actually one multipurpose piece of furniture. it is not just a bed, but italso serves as a seat because i sometimes sit with my legsdangling under the shelf. the bed has trap doorsunderneath, where i keep two giant pieces of luggage. the shelving unit is reallyessential, i think, to the design of the space. it allows me to display a lotof the things that i've

collected throughoutmy travels. one of my favorite things to dois go through really high end art magazines and rip outpages of beautiful work and frame them. i know that it's kind of a cheapway of going about it, but i like that because you canperiodically change things and you don't have to feel soobligated to feature a piece that you might have spenta lot of money on. i was looking for drawer pullsfor something else entirely.

as i was rummaging through allthe bins, i saw these amazing lion drawer pulls. so i put them in a grid and idisplay my earrings on them. i knew from the get-go iwanted a minimal shade. so i bought a super cheap shadefrom home depot and i put text on it. i actually cut all the lettersout of black contact paper, and i took a quote out ofapocalypse now, which is one of my favorite films.

i'm really lucky that i have alittle entry vestibule coming into the room, so ihave a place to store all of my things. it gets dark in the vestibule, and it gets dark in that corner of the bedroom. and i love the fact that i canput one lamp that's right in between two rooms and justpull it back and forth. i think when people come intomy space, usually they say first, oh my god.

it's so small. and then secondly they say, it'sactually bigger than i thought it would be basedon the pictures. i think people are surprisedthat when you're actually in here, it doesn't feelclaustrophobic all all. it has a really warm, net-likefeeling to it. when i was little, i thoughti wanted to live in an rv. so in a weird way, i thinkliving in a tiny space is fulfilling a childhooddream of mine.

it did not look like thiswhen i got here. and i put a lot ofwork into it. but i've been reallyhappy here. they're going to have to drag meout kicking and screaming. i don't want to move, sohopefully i'll be able to stay here for a while. -are you a socialmedia darling? do you like to hang out onfacebook, twitter, pinterest, or even tumblr?

Space saving ideas for small apartment

hej! we know more and more people are moving to cities and living in small apartments. so we challenged ourselves to make a bedroom as small as possible for a young couple renting their space. of course the bedroom needs to have room for sleeping, relaxing, getting dressed and tons of storage. the challenge is to think differently. we started by making a multifunctional bed. we built the base using metod kitchen cabinets for big time under the bed storage. we left this space for movable storage. we screwed wheels on an ivar shelf, so some things can be hidden but still easy to access. because this couple rents, we tried not to drill any holes. but they can still show their personalities with textiles and by taping up their favourite things. here we made a getting ready corner. these mirrors attach with double-stick tape and don't make holes, either.

natural light helps make a room feel bigger, so we were careful not to block the window. we have lamps, too, just not on the floor. what about hanging stuff? here, we made an outfit board out of a piece of wallpapered wood. on this wall, we built a different kind of wardrobe. we made the outfit board idea even bigger by painting sheets of wood and covering them with knobs. to maximise space, we worked in layers and put movable clothes racks in front. this multifunctional storage bench makes a place to sit and put on socks and shoes. that's a lot of storage and ideas in one bedroom, but we squeezed it down to 9.5 square metres. we had to build it, of course. come on in. we'll show you how it works. eventhough the room is small, well-planned storage makes it feel bigger. and open floor space leaves room for two even if it's tight sometimes. movable furniture means flexibility, so you can hide things and work in layers. added touches like knobs, handles and paint tie the room's style together.

textiles make the bedroom personal and of course, comfy, too. multifunctional is magical. a roller blind can be a movie screen. a drawer can be a bedside table. ready to find the possibilities in your small space? use multifunctional, movable and layered solutions to create smart storage and open floor space. happy planning!

Small studio apartment decorating ideas photos

bill: my name is bill andi'm an environmentalist. and we're here in new yorkcity in the east village. i moved into this space 10 yearsago, and it was in such bad condition. plastic bags as insulationin the walls. and the windows wereboarded up. the floor had basicallyholes-- you could see below it. i was recycling.

i'm an environmentalist. and so i didn't want to comehome to the same dirt that i was facing every day inmy life of cleaning up abandoned gardens. i had all these criteria, though, so i wrote them down. i had to have recycledmaterials. i had to somehow make theapartment look bigger with depth of field andlighting tricks. but then it also had to beexactly opposite of the stuff

i was doing in the daytime. it had to be you'd come in,it was perfectly clean. when i first moved in here, everybody in the east village wore black, and they didit for two reasons. to be cool, but alsobecause it was impossible to stay clean. these panels are plexiglas, andyou can see that this is the early design. the lights are in the corner.

i didn't know what to do,so i screwed it in. and i was experimentingwith it a lot. so then i come outwith this wall. instead of having the kick fromunderneath, i put the kick in the inside. i came up with a way to hangthem with fishing line, so there's no screws. if you can get behind here--it's almost like tinfoil, but you see how it moves?

and when it's a windy day, you'll see all this crazy shimmering. sometimes when you design stufffrom scratch, you'd have to really open up yourmind, and say, well, that's not right. but boy, it looks great. i started asking people betterways to do projects. the ceiling came out so goodthat i just laid on the floor and i just stood up inthis kind of mirror,

and thought, wow. the squares almost look likevery nice ceiling panels. so there's early designs mixedwith later designs here. and there you are. streamlined, everythinghidden-- but yet everything's here. this was something i gotfrom pan am when they went out of business. wow, these are really beautifulcabinets, and they

have such history. then i found this old-school'50s piece, and this is how they used to do it inside thewall, and i was trying to do some of that. in the bathroom, again,is recycled material. originally i didn't know whatto do with the shower. i'm still working on it, but ihave the drain out here and a drain over here. so you don't need a wall.

also, the floor isa heated floor. this little thermostatcontrols the floor. i saw this is in a casino, andi was like, gotta have that. again, the sink, you can seestraight through it. it makes the spacelook bigger. one time i saw one of thosecommercials where they made everything white. andi was like, that's how i'd want my apartment. just the product.

i know a lot of people come inhere, and they're like, it's this a spaceship? what is this? and i'm like, no. it's perfect. it's nothing it's what i want. i don't want anything. tracy metro: likehome and design? have facebook, twitter, tumblr, and pinterest?

Small studio apartment decorating ideas on a budget

by the time you’ve paid your rent, bought your furniture, and forked over cash for toilet paper the last thing you want is to drop more money. this is 37 easy and cheap decorating ideas for your house by alanna okun & greta alvarez 1. hang art on your empty wall. there’s a ton of free public domain art available online like from public library sites or wikimedia commons. all you need is a printer and maybe a frame if you fancy. 2. display keys from everywhere you’ve lived.

if you have roommates or live with a significant other, add theirs to the collection too! picked up an affordable little shadow box from target and simply scribbled the location and date of each key underneath. 3. find a better way to use your old stack of books. you could stack them to make a fashionable side table, use them to hide unsightly things like cords or your router or just strap on a cushion on it and call it a seat. 4. make garlands from paper cut-outs. made a heart template out of posterboard and then traced and cut out all of the hearts.

sewed each strand together, wrapped each line around the wood and secured the string on the top and back with tape. cut some lace and hot glued it over the front of the wood, making sure to seal each string 5. use paint chips to cover an entire wall. you could use removable poster tape or painters tape to minimize wall damage. 6. download and print this adorable calendar or even-more-adorable 3d letters 7. you could also use these patent-design prints or just a simple wall flowers 8. if you want to decorate with jars or wine bottles nail polish remover will help you to take the labels off.

9. use newspaper to make a wall design, like a map or just straight-up use maps. even if you did it without the frames, it's still looks pretty rad. 10. re-cover you boring or beat-up lampshade with a diy vintage lampshade. 11. print out your instagrams even if *you* don’t have a printer for all of these chances are your office or your friend or your friends’ office does if everything else fail, you can spring for a couple bucks to have staples do it 12. display old t-shirts that have sentimental value. mount them on canvas if you have any

or you could use squares of cardboard cut from old boxes 13. diy a custom rug from caret samples. attach bunch of them using duct tape or display them individually 14. hang pieces of fabric samples as wallpaper. there’s a lot of places that will give out wallpaper samples for free. use them well. if fabric samples is too hard, you could use leftover wrapping paper instead. 15. display magazines on hangers. it’s a step above taping torn covers to your dorm room walls. simply open your most favorite magazines in the middle and strip them on the hanger.

easy-peasy. 16. hang vintage posters from freevintageposters.com 17. spruce up a bland wall with colorful tape it’s so simple even the most pinterest-challenged of aspiring home improvers could do it. all you need is colorful tape, scissors, and a desire to be happy. (bonus points if you use washi tape!) 18. make a pop-art picture of your dog take a photo of your dog, print it on a a piece of pink paper (play around with the contrasts) cut the image out, and glue it to a yellow sheet of paper.

do that and you’re basically andy warhol with a printer, glue, paper, and scissors. 19. diy a headboard made of books first head to your local thrift store and find yourself a lot of old books. get a piece of wood the size you want for your headboard and then mark the matress height. find the perfect book layout. mark the order you want the book in then hammer books in place. stick the top pages in place with some double sided tape and voila… your new headboard is ready. 20. make a unique rug using strips of cloth

you’ll need a non-slip cloth, one of those with little holes, and strips of cloth. in just a little bit of time, you’ll have a super stylish and ultra comfy rug. follow the exact step by step guide at craftaholics anonymouse. 21. make a polka-dotted wall or try a cool variation on your door gold on a white wall makes for a truly unforgettable effect. all you need is contact paper and scissors, and boom you have a stunning decoration that's also super easy to remove when you get bored with it. 22. use tree trunks as tables of course, you’ll have to have a lumberjack friend, or something like that…

23. decorate the washer and dryer with adhesive tape instead of washi tape. use insulating tape or electrician’s tape (the kind you use on electrical cables) to make doing your laundry slightly less annoying. you can get the tape in any hardware store. 24. hang photos, magazine images, or any other pictures on clipboards it’s got a workshop-y feel to it and is sure to be the envy of all your ~artsy~ friends. 25. add a touch of color to your old chair spray a can of spray paint to give your old chair chair a new lease on life. 26. make a wall of license plates in your bathroom

the greater the variety of years and cities you have, the better. 27. hang your photos in an original way get an old picture frame, clothespins, some string, and your best photo memories printed out and you’re set. 28. refresh your dining room table with different color chairs it adds a welcome pop of color to your space and is sure to brighten up your mornings. find chairs which already come with variety of color or if you can’t find it, spray paint them. 29. turn an old drawer into a mini-shelf you don’t have to go to ikea to get a look like this within an hour, you can achieve a more unique version for far less money.

simply repaint them, and attach them to your wall. easy… 30. a rustic coat hanger for fall prepare a piece of wood, sand and then paint them collect some dried branches, cut each piece at the base with a hand saw at a slight angle so when you place them on the face of the wood, they go diagonally upward. drill some holes in the diagonal direction as marked attach the branches with screws and a little bit of glue at the base. easy and awesome 31. use a ladder as a bookshelf

ladders are really useful to have around, but they also take up a lot of space. make the most of this necessity by adorning it with all your favorite books and maybe a framed picture or a vase of flowers at the top 32. a cool vintage flower pot the idea is to transplant a plant to a vintage piece (in a bag so you can still water it). just make sure you use plants that don’t require a lot of care and that don’t have very long roots 33. revive something old most of us have furniture in our homes that we love but we don’t get excited over them. so what should we do? take some risks and give them a makeover!

step 1: use masking tape, and mark some evenly spaced points on the bottom circular edge of the lamp shade step 2: paint the pattern onto the shade. when the paint dries, carefully peel off the tape with only 2 steps, now we have a totally different looking lamp shade. 34. ombrã© paint to revive an old dresser choose a color and paint each drawer with a different shade. 35. use an old window or closet door to hold your mail and postcards when you see one of these, grab it, paint it, and put it to better use 36. if you have stairs in your house, paint them to give more life into your house. 37. brighten up a corner of your room and add letters, photos, and other ~inspiration~

literally the only thing you need is a set of lights, an empty wall, and some inspirational photos and letters and that’s all for now… we hope that all tips on this video could help you redocorate your house better. for more fresh and creative organizing videos please to subscribe to our channel. thanks for watching and i’ll see you in the next videos.
